What is Karate?

"True karate is this: that in daily life one's mind and body be trained and developed in a spirit of humility, and that in critical times, one be devoted utterly to the cause of justice." -- Gichin Funakoshi

Karate translated either means "Chinese hand" or "Empty hand"

Traditionally Karate consists basically of hand and foot techniques. Hand techniques are divided into defensive and offensive moves. Foot techniques are divided into kicking techniques; snap and thrust kicks. Other important elements of Karate include stances, posture, body shifting, hip rotation, and breathing.

Most Karate styles include in their basic technique training, sparring and forms (kata). Katas are pre-arranged attacks and defences done in sequence for training purposes.

What is Karate-Jitsu?

Karate-Jitsu is based upon Traditional Karate, but allows the introduction and use of techniques from other martial arts and is updated to present-day needs.  Basically, it is a mixed martial arts system which comprises Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Reality Based Self Defence and Kickboxing.

Budoshinkai translated means 'the true way of the warrior'.

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu/MMA?

Jiu Jitsu [jiu], literally translated, means "Gentle, Flexible, Soft, or Relaxed" in Japanese. [jitsu] translates to "Technique, Form, Style, Art". However, the dictionary defines Jiu Jitsu as "an art of weaponless fighting employing holds, throws and paralyzing blows, joint locking manipulation and chokes to subdue or disable an opponent." Jiu Jitsu does not use brute strength to overpower an opponent, but rather skill, leverage, finesse and flexibility. Economy of energy, balance and grace are the outstanding hallmarks of a good Jiu Jitsu practitioner.

There are three basic aspects to learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. First is learning individual positioning and submission techniques. Second is drilling in which individual techniques are practiced in combination in order to develop proper technique. Third is wrestling (rolling) in which paired students both try to apply a submission technique.

MMA is the fusion between the stand-up fighting and ground fighting components. MMA has become increasingly popular over the last few years as a result of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) cage fighting promotions.
